The correlation between epithet, metaphor and comparison is given as an opposition where the unmarked element is comparison. The basis of epithet is the full comparative construction with adjective. On this basis epithet is created. The basis of metaphor is a reduced incomplete comparative construction, because it would be a mistake to emphasize separate characteristics. Unlike metaphor, epithet is a word from which any derivative forms can be made. Epithet is represented as a new independent language unit, but not as an indirect additional meaning of the word which is already known.
