Abstract
The article analyzes the most common mistakes when writing the equations of the
electrolysis of aqueous solutions of electrolytes. The mistakes under analysis are typical for
those who take the entrance test on chemistry at Moscow State Regional University, and the
tasks of Moscow region Contest on Chemistry for schoolchildren.
The article covers the problems of describing the processes of electrolysis using insolu
ble (inert) and soluble electrodes. The authors show the possible processes occurring at
the cathode and anode in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of electrolytes. The article
describes the processes of electrolysis of solutions containing a mixture of cations. Much
attention is given to the tasks to quantify the substances released at the electrodes.
