ASSIMILATION OF THE TERMS OF CHRISTIAN ARCHITECTURE IN THE RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES (STRUCTURAL MORPHEME ANALYSIS)

https://doi.org/10.18384/2224-0209-2023-2-1338

Abstract

Aim. To systematize and classify the religious terms of architecture in accordance with the type of their assimilation in the recipient English and Russian languages.

Methodology. This work uses the common formal-structural, morphemic, and statistical analyses of special vocabulary units. The terms are viewed both in synchrony and diachrony.

Results. The work analyzed 50 Russian terms and 50 English ones. The  article states the structural changes that occurred to them, or, as in the case of the “zero” group, their absence. There is a variety of assimilation processes in the terminology of two languages, according to which they were divided into the following groups: zero, complete, root, dropout, change, addition of inflection. The detailed results of the work are given  at the end of the article.

Research implications. The study results may be of use of the terminologists to organize and systematize the process of loan words assimilation, to facilitate the process of transferring new lexical units in a more appropriate version of the recipient language. These results can be applied in the classes of linguistics, terminology and, possibly, architecture studies. The results of the work may be of interest in terminological translation and editing.
