Abstract
The article provides a general description of Goncharovs gift and his main
achievements as an artist. It is shown that the author of the famous novel- trilogy is not
just a brilliant chronicler, and a master of artistic generalization, converting originally local
and private characters (circumstances) into the images of the ontological and thus enduring
meaning and signifi cance. The author singled out the resources (folklore, archetypal
and mythological), which were used by I. Goncharov in his creative work, particularly while
creating the central characters of Oblomov. Due attention is paid to Goncharovs talent as
one of the great philosophers of love (family) and its place in the public relations. The article
gives some brief characteristics of a unique genre of Goncharovs literary travel Frigate
Pallada .
