Abstract
theme in J. Londons storybook Smoke Bellew (1912). The author pays special attention
to the analysis of themes and motives, poetic means of their realization, which make it
possible to speak about the connection of his late stories with the writers early Northern
stories, and of some special features of his creative evolution. The dynamics of the main
characters development, traced in the article, makes it possible to make conclusions about
the continuity in J. Londons views in the context of his interest to the person - nature -
civilizationproblem.
