https://doi.org/10.18384/2224-0209-2010-1-387

Abstract

The article is aimed at researching the pragmatic aspect of the generation of abbreviations in modern English. It examines the use of the word play technique which use makes possible the creation of inherently expressive abbreviations - acronyms homonymous to usual words and backronyms (reverse acronyms). The analysis of structural and semantic relations in the word-formation pair allows to consider the extralingustic context of their generation as the distinguishing characteristic of the abbreviation types mentioned.
