ABOUT DILEMMAS AND PROSPECTS OF IRAQI KURDISTAN’S INDEPENDENCE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the identification and analysis of key factors that determine the Kurdish people’s striving for independence by the example of Iraq. The main focus is on the substantiation of the thesis that the issue of the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan has now come to the fore due to the very logic of radical geopolitical shifts in the region as a result of the aggressive wars caused by the West interference. For a variety of reasons, the Iraqi Kurds proved to be the closest to carrying out their aspirations. After analyzing the pros and cons of the referendum for the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan it was concluded that its implementation is fraught with very serious negative consequences for the geopolitical situation of the entire Middle East region. At the same time, it is shown that in the conditions of those tectonic shifts in the world, characterized by the growth of national self-awareness and the fragmentation of many states, the issue of the Kurds’ striving for independence cannot be taken out of the bracket.
