Западная медицина стала известна в Корее в конце XIX в. Тогда же впервые был осуществлён перевод на корейский язык учебников по медицине, в которых использовались иероглифические термины японского образца. Эти термины использовались в Корее до 1945 г. После этого началось движение по «очищению и упрощению терминов». В четвёртом издании словаря медицинских терминов многие иероглифические термины были заменены на исконно корейские, т. е. победили пуристы. В пятом издании словаря восстановили многие иероглифические термины, исключённые из четвёртого издания. Процесс упорядочения терминов привёл к ещё большему их усложнению. В настоящее время вопрос стандартизации и систематизации медицинских терминов остаётся открытым.
Western medicine became known in Korea in the late XIX century. Then for the first time it was translated into Korean for medical textbooks, in which medical terms of Japanese pattern were used. Those terms were used in Korea until 1945. After that a movement for terms "purification and simplification" began. In the fourth edition of the dictionary of medical terms many hieroglyphic terms were replaced by native Korean words. A lot of hieroglyphic terms excluded from the fourth edition were restored in the fifth edition of the dictionary, so the process of ordering the terms led to their further complication. Currently, the issue of standardization and systematization of medical terms remains unsolved.
