<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The mechanism of contextual influence on perception of a vowel sound is described. Known experiments on perception of the English vowels of synthetic speech are discussed, especially those showing the change of the test word identification depending on the formant structure of an introductory sentence. New interpretation of the discussed experiments results is given. An experiment on changing the categorical perception of a vowel in the context of natural speech is shown.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>восприятие гласных звуков</kwd><kwd>категория гласного звука</kwd><kwd>фонетический контекст</kwd><kwd>фонетическое пространство</kwd><kwd>формантные частоты гласных звуков</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>perception of vowel sounds</kwd><kwd>category of a vowel</kwd><kwd>phonetic context</kwd><kwd>phonetic space</kwd><kwd>formant frequencies of vowel sounds</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Кодзасов С.В., Кривнова О.Ф.
