<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article examines some trends in the evolution of public thought in North American colonies of Great Britain of late 17th - early 18th cc. The development of colonial society caused Americans' growing interest to learning their own history. The author studies the perception of the center of the Empire by political and intellectual elites of Virginia and Massachusetts. Besides, their attempts to save or rearrange relationships with central government are studied through different interpretations of the past in early American historical tracts.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>общественная мысль</kwd><kwd>историческое знание</kwd><kwd>колониальный период истории США</kwd><kwd>колонии</kwd><kwd>метрополия</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>public thought</kwd><kwd>historical knowledge</kwd><kwd>colonial period of the US history</kwd><kwd>colonies</kwd><kwd>parent state</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Гальцин Д.Д.
