<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article analyzes the impact of Nikolai Gogols creative activity on the
development of Western literature. The world representatives of artistic thought got more
interested in the phenomenon of Gogol-philosopher and literary artist by the middle of the XX
century. The Russian classics heritage reevaluation manifested itself in a variety of critical
articles and monographs, as well as in the stage adaptations of Gogols plays in the theaters
of the world. Gogol solved the problems of existentialism and absurdity in his own way: he
made fun of foolishness and vulgarity of soulless, petty life. Gogol traditions were the basis
of the Russian literature (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov) and also infl uenced the general
development of American, Japanese and Italian cultures.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>комическое</kwd><kwd>гротеск</kwd><kwd>абсурд</kwd><kwd>экзистенциализм</kwd><kwd>фантасмагория</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>comic</kwd><kwd>grotesque</kwd><kwd>absurd</kwd><kwd>existentialism</kwd><kwd>phantasmagoria</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Адамович Г.
