Статья посвящена малоизвестным отечественному читателю аспектам создания английской Библии в XVI - начале XVII столетия (до появления Библии короля Иакова). Отмечается, что если первоначально католики часто отрицали саму допустимость передачи Священного Писания на «вульгарный» (в данном случае английский) язык, то в эпоху Реформации речь шла уже, главным образом, о противопоставлении «правильных» версий «искажённым». Особое внимание уделяется полемике между Томасом Мором и Уильямом Тиндейлом, а также позиции создателей католической Дуэйско-Реймсской Библии (1582-1610).

The paper deals with some aspects of the creation of the Bible text in English in the 16th - the beginning of the 17th centuries (before the appearance of King James's Bible). These aspects are unfamiliar to the Russian readers. It is mentioned that, initially Catholics often denied even the possibility of interpreting the Holy Writ into «vulgar languages' (in this case into English), whereas during the Reformation period the main point of the discussion was the opposition of the «correct' and «corrupted' translations. The authors paid special attention to the polemics between Sir Thomas More and William Tyndale, as well as to the viewpoint of the creators of the Catholic Douai-Rheims Bible (1582-1610).
